When two busy executives relocated from the East Coast, they found a beautiful new home located in the heart of Chicago’s Old Town. While the house had all the amenities that the couple was looking for, it did not embrace their modern design aesthetic. jamesthomas’ first duty was to scale back some of the interior’s traditional detailing. Ornate columns which defined the dining area were removed to create a more open living space. Heavy cabinets were replaced with large pendant fixtures over the kitchen breakfast bar. Walls were painted dark, saturated colors to contrast with the traditional feeling cherry floors and trim. The designers lined two entire walls in a guest bedroom with drapery to mask the irregular window placement and to allow for a successful furniture layout. Sleek, contemporary furniture in soft, light colors creates an interesting juxtaposition with the homes’ architecture and reflects the client’s personal collection and taste.
