The team at jamesthomas was originally brought in to re-design this unique loft space. When the clients were presented with the opportunity to purchase an adjoining unit, the project took a new direction. With over 5,000 square feet to work with, along with the ability to build an unprecedented penthouse and terrace above the existing spaces, jamesthomas’ design abilities were put to the test. The clients allowed jamesthomas much design freedom, working within the confines that the space must be comfortable, yet stylish. A neutral color palette was conceived which allows the eye to take in the amazing skylines views afforded from the floor to ceiling windows in the main living space. The fireplace was re-conceived to act as an arresting visual barrier between the living and dining rooms. A cramped mezzanine level was demolished to make way for a main floor wine room with soaring ceilings. The adjoining unit became a clever guest wing complete with a California kitchen. A new penthouse and roof top deck were built which allow the clients to perch above their neighboring buildings and soak up the urban setting. Interesting, yet subtle, wallcoverings, finishes and accessories add drama and a personal touch to the space. Check out this project in the Chicago edition of Luxe (Fall 2009).
